In Limbo

One of my goals for this year is to be able to look at things in a more painterly way and “see” how to paint them in a loose, but expressive way. I find that some subjects are far easier to “see” and interpret than others…

This painting comes from a reference photo by Marie Francis on PMP. It is a Greek Cypriot church that is now located in Turkish territory. I love the textures and the shapes in the photo and the story behind it caught my attention.

Favourite colours in full force! Gorgeous Daniel Smith: Moonglow, Fuchsite Genuine, Mayan Blue, and Sleeping Beauty Turquoise, with a bit of Schmincke Translucent Orange to add some warmth and zing. I let the colours mix on the paper and used salt for texture in the mountain.

I got carried away as usual, overworking it and, as a result, have lost some of the transparency, but stopped myself from painting it again – this one will do. [Another goal is to deal with that inner driver for perfection….]
